From Albania to Ohrid by minibus with driver

It takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes from Tirana Airport to Ohrid, not counting the wait at the border. The route follows the Tirana–Elbasan motorway, passes through Librazhd and the Qafe Thana border crossing, then runs along the lake via Struga. The main towns around Ohrid

The other towns in the region are easy to reach from Ohrid. Times are approximate, from Ohrid:

  • Struga, about 15 minutes: the town where the Black Drin flows out of the lake.
  • St. Naum Monastery, about 30 minutes: on the lakeshore, near the springs of the Black Drin.
  • Pogradec, about 45 minutes: on the Albanian side of the lake, via the Tushemisht border crossing.
  • Bitola, about 1 hour 15 minutes: Shirok Sokak street and the ruins of Heraclea.

Ohrid Airport

Ohrid’s “St. Paul the Apostle” Airport is about 10 kilometers north of the city. If your flight arrives at or departs from Ohrid, we’ll pick you up or take you to the airport on request, and you can continue to Albania with the same minibus.

For most international flights, Tirana Airport is the easiest option: from there, Ohrid is about 2 hours and 45 minutes away.

What to see in Ohrid

  • The Church of St. John at Kaneo: the church on the cliff, with the most famous view of the lake.
  • The old town: narrow streets with white houses, churches and shops selling Ohrid pearls.
  • The ancient theater: the ancient theater in the heart of the old town.
  • Tsar Samuel’s Fortress: above the town, with views over the whole lake.
  • Plaošnik: the Church of St. Clement and the ruins of the ancient school.
  • The Bay of Bones: a museum on the water, a reconstruction of a prehistoric village, about 20 minutes to the south.

What documents do we need to travel to Ohrid?

Every passenger needs a valid passport or ID card, according to the rules for their nationality. Check the rules before you travel.

Can we visit Ohrid as a day trip from Tirana?

Yes. With about 2 hours and 45 minutes of driving each way, Ohrid works as a day trip, but it’s a long day. With a night in Ohrid or Struga, you’ll also have time for St. Naum.

Can we combine Ohrid with Pogradec and Korca?

Yes. From Ohrid, via St. Naum and the Tushemisht border crossing, Pogradec is about 45 minutes away and Korca about 1.5 hours. See minibus with driver in Korca.
