Route and travel time

From Tirana Airport, the road heads south via Fier, Tepelena and Gjirokastra to the Kakavija border crossing. After the border, the road continues into Greece to Ioannina. The distance is about 305 km and the drive takes about 5 hours and 45 minutes, not counting the wait at the border.

What to see in Ioannina

Ioannina lies on the western shore of Lake Pamvotida, facing Mount Mitsikeli. Its historic heart is the old castle above the lake, with the Aslan Pasha Mosque, now an ethnographic museum, and narrow streets lined with silversmiths’ shops, cafes and restaurants.

On the lake’s island, reached by boat from the shore, there are Byzantine monasteries and a museum dedicated to Ali Pasha of Tepelena, who ruled from Ioannina and was killed on the island in 1822. From the city it’s easy to reach the Perama Cave, the Zagori villages and the Vikos Gorge.
