Route and travel time

From Tirana Airport, the road heads south past Durres and through Fier, then on to Tepelena along the Vjosa valley. After Tepelena it enters the Drino valley, where Gjirokastra spreads across the mountainside. The distance is about 215 km and the drive takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes.

What to see in Gjirokastra

Gjirokastra is known as the “City of Stone” for its tower houses with stone walls and roofs climbing the mountainside above the Drino valley. Above the town rises the castle, one of the largest in the country, home to the National Armaments Museum and the stage of the National Folklore Festival.

Stroll through the Old Bazaar, visit traditional houses such as the Skenduli House and the Zekate House, or the Ismail Kadare House Museum. From Gjirokastra, the Blue Eye and Saranda are about an hour away, while to the east lies Permet.
